Nanaimo District Museum

When visiting the coastal city of Nanaimo, one of the sites that can be seen is the Nanaimo District Museum, which is located downtown on the waterfront. The museum has times of early life on Vancouver Island, and items from the First Nation. There is a coal mining exhibit that will educate the visitor in the early coal mining in the region, European and Chinese exhibits and hands on exhibits.

There are audio-visual presentations, and it is possible to walk the streets that have been recreated of early Nanaimo, which include Chinatown. This will take the visitor back in time to the days when life was simpler, and they can experience what it was like in the coastal town of Nanaimo. This is something the family will enjoy, and it will be a learning experience for the younger members of the family.

When visiting the Nanaimo District Museum, there are guided tours with a tour guide that will explain each exhibit in detail or visitors can wander the museum on their own where each exhibit has detailed explanations that can be read.

Visitors will learn about native life of the First Nation, and how they survived in the early years, along with their crafts and works of art from first residents up to the present day life. These exhibits include audio-visual and interactive displays that are both fun and educational for the visitor to the Nanaimo District Museum.

There is a gift shop for visitors to take a piece of history home or give as presents from their trip to Nanaimo. This is one way to remember the learning experience of the early people of Nanaimo when life was not as fast paced as today and the rich history of the First Nation people and their way of life.
