Nanaimo Harbourfront Walkway

One of the sites that should be experienced by visitors to Nanaimo is the Harbourfront Walkway; this is located across the Lions Great Bridge over the Mill River. What will be found by the visitor to Nanaimo is the 4.4 kilometer walkway that is filled with shops and boutiques, filled with souvenirs. There are outdoor cafes and ice cream shops that have a view of the harbor and all the daily events that go on, such as the fishing boats, the freighters and the ferries that travel in these waters.

There is the Swy-A0Lagoon, which is the only man made tidal lagoon in Canada, with an arched bridge that leads to Maffeo-Sutton Park. This is where festivals are held in the summer and the promenade is filled with local artists that sell their art work. Visitors to the park from mid April through early October will find a farmers market every Friday in the area of Bastion.

This is where local produce is sold and local handmade crafts.  In the end of July one of the largest fun events of the year is held that has been a Nanaimo tradition since 1967. This is the World Championship Bathtub Race, starting with the original race that ran for 36 miles, beginning in Nanaimo Harbor, across the Straights of Georgia, to Vancouver’s Fishman’s Cove. Today the race begins in Nanaimo Harbor and circles Entrance Island, around Winchelsea Island, and ends at Departure Bay.

This is one of the places visitors to Nanaimo will find daily adventures year round and will have an enjoyable day in the fresh salt air with a panoramic view of the water from the walkway or from the cafes and ice cream shops along the 4.4 kilometer walk. This is one of the attractions in Nanaimo that the entire family will enjoy.
